The smallest of the big cats, they are secretive and rare in the wild, preferring to remain alone and hidden from view. Because of this, studying them is a unique challenge, and while we know much from watching cats in captivity, these two species of cat remain elusive and poorly understood. Clouded Leopard Taxonomy While all species of cats are closely related and classified as one family, the Felidae, genetic research has shown the clouded leopard to be more closely related to the large cat species than smaller cats.
Thus, clouded leopards are considered a member of the Pantherinae - a subfamily of the Felidae family that also includes lions, tigers, jaguars, leopards, and snow leopards. While they are known as clouded leopards , cloudies are not directly related to normal leopards. Until , there was thought to be a single clouded leopard species. However, recent genetic and morphological research has shown that there are two distinct species. The cats on mainland Asia and Taiwan kept the traditional species name Neofelis nebulosa while the cats from Borneo and Sumatra took the name the Sunda clouded leopard Neofelis diardi.
Furthermore, this also changed the number of subspecies. All nebulosa subspecies have been combined into one group, while the diardi populations seem to be split into two subspecies: N. Ever since then the two species have not met nor interbre. In fact, even though they may look similar, genetically a clouded leopard is more different to its sister species than a lion is to a tiger! The majority of clouded leopard pictures are from mainland nebulosa individuals, meaning that photos of the Sunda clouded leopard are much more rare.
Wild Sunda clouded leopards were only first caught on video in early Habitat and Distribution Clouded leopards primarily live in lowland tropical rainforests, but can also be found in dry woodlands and secondary forests.
They have been spotted at elevations up to feet in the Himalayan mountains. However, this range has shrunk due to habitat destruction and human poaching. Description and Adaptations Clouded leopards are a medium-sized cat named for the cloud-like spots on its coat. These provide camouflage in the dappled light of its forest habitat. In China the cat is known as the 'Mint Leopard' because its spots can also look like mint leaves. Send a letter, email or tweet, and download a Palm Oil Shopping App.
Whenever Friday the 13th rolls around, even the least superstitious of us might look askance at a black cat or shiver at an owl hoot. But animal superstitions, although fun, can cause pretty bad luck for the wildlife who cross their paths.

Clouded leopard. Did you know? Neofelis nebulosa. Discover Clouded leopards. Clouded leopards live in tropical forests, grasslands, scrub and mangrove swamps in Nepal, Sikkim, southern China, Sumatra, Thailand and Borneo. Find them in the Asian Forest Sanctuary. Meet the Keepers.
Our elephant keepers also look after the clouded leopards. The average life span of the clouded leopard is 12 to 15 years, though they may live up to 17 years in human care. Clouded leopards are a vulnerable species.
Although officially protected in most range countries, enforcement in many areas is weak. It is estimated that fewer than 10, mature individuals remain in the wild and no single population including more than 1, animals.
Camera traps are helping scientists better estimate population numbers. The population in human care is around 70 and genetic diversity is presumed to be very low, with most individuals being related as closely as siblings and cousins. Clouded leopards are victims of habitat destruction and illegal poaching. Their forest habitat is experiencing the world's fastest rate of deforestation. Clear cutting of forests for use as agricultural lands such as palm oil, is its primary threat, as the clouded leopard requires large tracts of forest for hunting.
They are also widely hunted for their teeth, decorative pelt, and for bones for the traditional Asian medicinal trade. Clouded leopard pelts are the most commonly seen pelts on the illegal market. In , more than eighty clouded leopard pelts were for sale in one market in Myanmar Burma. Restaurants in Thailand and China that cater to wealthy Asian tourists also feature clouded leopard meat on their menus.
Fewer than 10 clouded leopards in the wild have been radio-collared and studied; 90 percent of what is known about clouded leopards comes from research on captive populations. Biologists traditionally divided clouded leopards into four regional subspecies. In late , a team of scientists including Smithsonian's National Zoo theriogenologist JoGayle Howard, found genetic evidence of two distinct species of clouded leopards.
It is estimated that the two forms diverged about 1. There is evidence that this species will be further divided into two distinct subspecies representing their origin: Neofelis diardi borneensis on the island of Borneo; Neofelis diardi sumatrensis on the island of Sumatra. This species is separate from Neofelis nebulosa, which retains three subspecies: N. This is the type on the Zoo's Asia Trail.
