I am a PhD candidate in the humanities, and had to pass four research languages in order to complete the program. That meant I had to learn to translate quickly, and recognize common phrases in each language. I continue to use it for quick translation or to check my own rendering. Dear Cardinal 55, we're happy to have you as a user, thank you so much for high rating and such a detailed feedback! Minor effort is required to edit them before saving the documents or emailing them.
My only gripe is that when combining multiple scanned pages, they are combined in a non-intuitive order. It would be nice if you could somehow number each page that was scanned in the order that you want them combined.
Maybe this could be fixed in a future release! Thank you for your feedback. We sincerely want to fix the situation that you encounter in the application. About two weeks ago, the feature of scanning an image directly from Photo quit working. Now I must go to the app first, get rid of the startup screen which informs me that I can go to Photo and share, and pull the image into the app that way.
To scan a new page, activate the "Camera" button at the top right of the page. A test translation into Spanish worked very well. All scanned pages are stored in the History section. To bring up the list of scanned pages, activate the "History" button on the bottom left of the screen. Each scanned page will have the date and the first line of the document.
The most recent scan will be at the top of the list. To bring up the full scan, double tap anywhere on the listing. Once the scanned page is on the screen, it can be translated or sent. Activate the "History" button at the bottom left of the screen to get back to the list of pages. To delete an item from History, activate the "Edit" button in the upper right corner.
Swipe left or right until the name of the page is spoken and the "Delete" option is presented. Double tap on the page and a confirmation dialogue will appear. Double tap and the page will be deleted. The StandScan is essentially a collapsible box with a hole on top of it.
When a photo is taken with a document placed on the bottom of the box and the phone's camera placed over the hole with the lens pointing down, the result should be a high quality scan. This product can be useful for people who do not have light perception. Instead, the developers indicate that they are good for travel and easily fit into a computer bag. According to their website, the StandScan works with any smartphone that has a back-facing camera as well as with the iPod touch.
A camera with at least a 3-megapixel resolution is required. At the time of this writing, StandScan does not work with the iPad, but the developers are working on that.
As of April , there is a special promotion for people who are visually impaired. At checkout, enter the promotion code "VIPhone" and receive a percent discount and a free battery holder. When the unit arrives, it feels like a flat folder with a cable protruding from one end. There are instructions included on how to assemble the StandScan, but they contain diagrams. Lay the StandScan on the floor or table with the small flap facing up.
Open the flap and fold out the sections starting with the left and, then, the right. To disassemble the unit, fold the right side first. On the first and third sections, there are tactile lines in the shape of triangles four in all. The useful part of this feature is that any email addresses, phone numbers, or postal addresses become clickable links.
This means that you simply need to tap or double-tap if using VoiceOver to activate the link to call a number, open a webpage, or send an email. This can significantly increase productivity if you are scanning in buisness cards or needing to enter an address into Maps. Firstly, the viewfinder window is about one-third of the size of what it is when using the standard camera.
This means that the totally blind user will need to be better than average at scanning using the iPhone and getting the image in the capture area may take multiple attempts. This is a minor inconvenience for those who tend to default to flick gestures when using VoiceOver, but over time, it wouldn't be too difficult to retain yourself to remember to finger drag. Individuals who use VoiceOver can certainly utilize this app effectively. In addition, scanned text can be exported to other apps that might be easier to use for longer articles or that may have more pleasant sounding voices.
But they are certainly not without a few options. For those who need just a bit more magnification and like the option of having clickable email addresses, phone numbers, and web addresses to minimize the need to switch apps as frequently, it might be worth purchasing the app. As previously stated in the section for VoiceOver users, scanned documents can be exported to other apps such as VoiceDream Reader, which has many more color, contrast, and size options for low vision users.
