Leaves are successful in maintaining soil moisture and soil temperature, and preventing weeds, soil erosion, and soil compaction. Bag and save leaves for compost, mulch or the garden. Leaf mold is different than composting. Leaf mold is a soil amendment produced when a pile of leaves decompose. Nitrogen ingredients are not added to the pile, as you would compost. Leaf mold improves soil moisture retention and is often used as mulch or tilled into the soil. Leaves, by themselves, take 6 — 12 months to break down.
Try looking for urban community gardens or schools with learning classrooms to donate your leaves. Many times they do not have access to falling leaves and would appreciate the donation. Use leaves in brush shelters to build wildlife habitats. Build the wildlife shelters for an animal about the size of a rabbit. Start with a bed of leaves and place logs or larger branches on top of them. Stack somewhat of a dome with tree limbs, decreasing the branch size as it gets higher. Fill the structure with leaves for added shelter and to shelter the insects and pupae on the leaves.
You might even see animals, like chipmunks, running away with leaves for their nest or toads hibernating in leaf litter. Just move the leaves on the lawn to the corner to create leaf pile for wildlife and use the leaf mold as it decomposes. Collect leaves to make fall collages, leaf prints, or to decorate your home. Fall leaves make a great table centerpiece.
Add jumping in a leaf pile and raking it again for more fun and exercise. You may be in luck. One plant in this article houses 31 different species of insects. We fill our fenced in garden in the fall with leaves and add grass clipping in the summer.
Never have to till in the spring to plant and no weeds. Spring and fall are there favorite seasons. My thoughts exactly. How does the grass get sun and air with leaves all over it? Can anyone explain how the grass survives if you leave the leaves? Once the leaf bits settle in, microbes and worms get to work recycling them," the website states.
For those who do like the look of a well-raked lawn, many cities across the country collect and compost leaves for use in gardens and flower beds. In parts of Toronto, homeowners are even allowed to rake the leaves to the edge of the roadway on specific dates, where specialized equipment will come along and remove them.

When the leaves break down where they fall, they return essential nutrients to the grass and soil. Additionally, the coverage that the leaves provide preserves soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Finally, birds and insects such as butterflies and moths depend on the fallen leaves. Pupa takes up residence in the leaves during the winter, so raking them up means you won't enjoy the butterflies that come later.
Birds also raid the leaf litter to find food for their babies. Raking leaves can be great exercise, but also back-breaking work. To save your back, try using a leaf blower. If you have a thick layer of leaves, you'll need a powerful leaf blower that can move leaves that can at times be heavy, wet, or dense. There are also many models of leaf blowers that offer vacuuming options so that you can transport the leaf dander to the compost pile.
If you have a thin layer of leaves, pass a mower fitted with a blade over the yard to cut them up. Then, simply leave the remnants where they are so that your lawn and your local wildlife can enjoy the benefits of leaf litter. Never burn leaves; the smoke it creates releases toxic chemicals like carbon monoxide. In addition, never put the leaves into plastic bags and send them to the landfill. Leaves take up space and the plastic bags will be harmful to the environment.
